Understanding Your Analysis
Tax Returns & Application Forms
ClearStaq reads tax returns and funding application forms as well as bank statements. Each one lands on the business it belongs to, so what the merchant claimed sits next to what the statements show.
Supported documents
- Tax returns: Form 1040, 1120, 1120-S and 1065.
- Application forms: funding application PDFs. ClearStaq reads the stated applicant data, such as the amount requested, use of funds and monthly revenue.
Sending them in
- Upload: add the file to the business from Upload, like a bank statement.
- Email: go to Settings → Email Submission. There is a separate address for Tax returns and one for Application forms. Send the PDF from a team member's address and the results come back by email.
- Client portal (Deal-flow): merchants can upload tax returns as one of your required documents. In Settings → Client Portal → Documents, choose whether tax returns are analyzed automatically after upload.
- API: send
document_kind=tax_returnordocument_kind=application_formtoPOST /api/v1/analyses. API reference
Where you see the results
- Businesses list: each business shows its latest return, for example Latest return: 2023 · Form 1120-S · Stated revenue: $1,291,311/yr.
- Tax Returns tab on the application: the return read line by line, by year.
- Application form on the application's Overview: the data the applicant declared. With no form uploaded you can enter the declared data by hand with Enter data manually.
Declared vs. analyzed
The stated revenue from the return or the application sits next to the true revenue from the bank statements. A large gap is a reason to look closer: ask for the latest statements, or the return the merchant actually filed.
Two views of a return
People read returns for different reasons, so the Tax Returns tab has two views:
- Advance: underwriting and operating analysis.
- CPA: filing and tax preparation review.
Set your default in Settings → Profile → Default tax returns audience. You can still switch views while you're looking at a return.
